James Devlin a.k.a Devlin originates from Dagenham, England and exploded on the scene in 2009 when videos for his tracks, ‘Community Outcast’, ‘Giant’ and ’London City’ were released. The latter remained at number 1 on Channel AKA’s music charts for 10 weeks unmoved. Having released two mixtapes, ‘The Art Of Rolling’ and more famously ‘Tales From The Crypt’, and an EP entitled ‘The DEVZ EP’, Devlin was definitely a name that had been buzzing around the grime scene. In 2010 Devlin released his debut album entitled ‘Bud, Sweat and Beers’ and the success of it was inevitable. The album went gold in the UK and peaked at number 2 on the UK R&B chart. Three singles were released from the album: ‘Brainwashed’, ‘Runaway’ and ‘Let It Go’.
Released on January 24th 2011, the rappers third single ‘Let It Go’ was produced by London based producer, Labrinth who also features on the song. The track describes a destructive relationship with graphic lyrics such as “All you do is make me angrier ‘til I wanna man-handle ya, I’m contemplating whether to kiss you or strangle ya” over a dirty bass line which is juxtaposed by Labrinth’s laid-back vocals in the chorus. A simple bridge of only strings and piano precedes the final chorus in which the title of the song is finally proclaimed. The genius lyrics in this track portrays just how much of an amazing rapper Devlin is and we cannot wait to hear what he has in store for the future.
