American rock band OneRepublic shot to fame in 2007 when their single ‘Apologise’ was remixed by world famous producer, Timbaland. The song broke records and bought fame and success to the then unknown band. Their second album ‘Waking Up’ was released in 2009 including singles “All The Right Moves”, “Secrets”, “Marchin’ On” and “Good Life”. Overall a 7/10.
1. Made For You
An eerie drum beat starts off the tune and as the beat builds we figure it’s not as eerie as first thought and is actually quite catchy with an impressive piano solo in the bridge.
2. All The Right Moves
The first single off the album includes cool snare rolls, a highly uplifting chorus and laid-back yet perfectly fitting guitar solo. The wide range of instruments in this rock band are definitely explored in this tune.
3. Secrets
Starts off with a cello soon followed by the vocals of Ryan Tedder and after a break the chorus comes in with vocal layering on the lyrics “all my secrets away” giving it a feeling of exaltation.
4. Everybody Loves Me
African drums and acoustic guitars begin this self-absorbed song with the lyrics “all I know is everybody loves me” and after these lyrics are proclaimed the music results in a chromatic breakdown (possibly the best part of the song).
5. Missing Person 1 & 2.
Strings are introduced after what sounds like auto-tuned gasps but when vocals come in, it makes sense. The enigmatic feeling at the beginning is then broken when drums are introduced during the second verse which is quite disappointing. The song then changes completely (possibly being the idea of Missing Person #2). A xylophone led melody starts the second half of this tune and a simple drum line is added as well. Although their musical ideas are quite clear, the execution isn’t as great as expected.
6. Good Life
The latest single off the album describes experiences in London and the “good life”. A very simple, almost generic song. Definitely an “obvious” song for a band of their genre and instrumentation.
7. All This Time
Sounds like something you’ve heard of crossed with something by Hillsong. The song is “cute”, possibly a song on a Valentine’s Day compilation album.
8. Fear
You know when you hear a simple song that’s so simple it works? Well, this song works but it does get a little monotonous (especially the piano melody), however, I cannot deny that the vocals on this track are incredible.
9. Waking Up
OneRepublic say they’re inspired by U2 and this becomes truly relevant in this song. An electric guitar riff keeps this song moving with an indefinite yet interesting vocal melody and a simple drum beat. The song ends with a beautiful strings/piano instrumental, exploring the idea of “waking up”. One of those songs that you must hear to understand.
10. Marchin’ On
Undeniably a stand out track. A kick drum keeps this track moving with a beautiful yet simple guitar riff and a chorus proclaiming the lyrics, “we’re marchin’ on, we’re marchin’ on!”
11. Lullaby
A very soothing song, hence the title. The song is relaxing and calm yet it soon becomes boring. A nice way to round off the album but individually it is quite a dull song.
