Gotye, real name Wouter De Backer, is an Australian based singer/songwriter has won five ARIA Awards and was been nominated for an MTV Award for Best Asia and Pacific act. Although the 31-year-old has only been in the limelight for quite a short while due to his breakthrough track, ‘Somebody I Used To Know’, Gotye has quite a large discography. The multi-instrumentalist has independently released three albums as the drummer of the band The Basics and three independent solo albums. ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ was released on July 6th 2011 and since then has received positive comments from Lily Allen, Ashton Kutcher, Katy Perry and more.
The song starts off with a simple guitar riff, a repeated acoustic bass line and a “cute” xylophone melody. Very laid back vocals then come in with the lyrics “now and then I think of when we were younger”. As the song continues it is clear that it is about a relationship that failed and the lyrics “somebody that I used to know” are proclaimed in the chorus which enters quite late in the song. The simplicity of this song is just so beautiful and when the backing vocals enter in the last chorus, the song is totally uplifted. Absolutely amazing!
